With a new crop of chefs serving distinct flavours and diverse cuisines to titillate our palate on the daily, we are spoilt for choice. If you are willing to forgo your regular watering hole for a palate cleanser and refresher, here are some new spots in the city that you can hit for a delectable fare and cosy interiors. From sumptuous food and regional cuisines to potent cocktails, these restaurants are on our radar for weekend binging. 

Dirty Buns

For those of you who have dined at and loved the food at Bastian and One Street, Dirty Buns is the brainchild of its sous chef, Boo Kim. A neon pink sign that reads ‘Lets Get Dirty’ welcomes you into the restaurant to a menu that is dirty. Literally. With dirty buns, dirty rolls, dirty bites, and sweet and dirty desserts, you can begin your meal with the Dirty Martini which is a unique concoction of jalapeno, tamarind, tequila, and agave. If you want a dirty roll, why not have the one filled with macaroni and cheese, sprinkled with cheddar, parmesan, bread crumbs, and truffle oil? This carb overload will be worth the calories. If a dirty bao is what you are craving, then their vast assortment may confuse you. We like the idea of bacon, scrambled eggs, and cheddar cheese: a breakfast bao so to speak. And while everything on their sweet and dirty bao listing looks equally delicious, the Dirty Boo is the highlight. It has the deadly trio: waffle, churros, and donut with a side of vanilla ice-cream, chocolate, and whipped cream. Don’t be afraid to get down and dirty with the food here. Use your hands and devour it, that’s the whole idea behind the restaurant.

Chances are that you have enjoyed a meal at Powai’s Mirchi and Mine, the first of its kind restaurant that employs staff with a hearing and speech impairment. From the same founders, Prashant Issar and Anuj Shah, comes another restaurant on the same lines, this time in collaboration with revered restaurateur Riyaz Amlani. With an extensive Indian food offering from across all states, the restaurant is not just inclusive when it comes to the staff, but also flaunts inviting decor with a tropical vibe complete with natural greens and plants strewn across. Their menu has a wide range of delicacies from chaat and tandoor to curries and biryani. While there are plenty of options to choose from for the sworn vegetarians, it’s the non-vegetarians that will enjoy a hearty and meaty meal here with several regional varieties of fish served Kerala style as well as spicy Kolhapuri flavoured.

Curry Tales

In case you didn’t get the culinary memo, regional food is on the rise and restaurants such as Bombay Canteen are giving this a nod by hosting regional pop-ups regularly other than using seasonal ingredients in their expertly cooked food. If you are jonesing an authentic, home-cooked south Indian fare, then your search ends at Curry Tales in Bandra. A must-try here is their Kerala thali that comes with Kerala-style vegetable stew, golden-brown fish fry, and appams: a simple yet delicious meal for a very reasonable price. You can also try their Crispy Dry Prawn Fry that is shallow fried in curry leaves or munch on the Bhindi Pulimunchi cooked in Mangalore spices and tamarind if you prefer your greens. For fish lovers, binge on surmai, bombil, prawns or crabs, all cooked differently but equally mouthwatering. Pair these with cocktails with a local flavour such as the Coaster Coconut Vodka or Kokum Cooler.

Sequel 2.0

Sequel has become the destination for a healthy meal and Instagram-approved smoothie bowls in the city. The cafe just underwent an overhaul and has reopened, bigger and better than before. Designed by interior maverick Ashiesh Shah who has adhered to his concept of Wabi Sabi, the space is a textural play. The farm-to-fork menu has a lot of their trusty go-tos, with a sprinkling of new dishes. Head here if you want a scrumptious meal that appeals to your palate but keeps the calories at bay. From an extensive offering of pressed juices, smoothie bowls, and salads, even their desserts are healthy, but not without satiating you. Our pick? The Peruvian Raw Cacao Tart and the Cacao Avo Mousse.

An exciting addition to the defunct Atria mall and putting it on the map again is Mizu. Founded by Vedant Malik and Chef Lakhan Jethani, the Izakaya-style restaurant will transpose you to the narrow alleys of Shinjuku that is known for its ramshackle tiny bars (Izakayas) and delicious yakirotis and gyozas. Those of you who have been to Japan can envision this, and those who haven’t, this is your ticket. With Japanese food that flaunts a hint of Indian flavour, Mizu boasts of an extensive list of yakitori which is meat cooked on skewers. Give Tsukune a try which is essentially chicken in Saffron miso sauce. Try Pork Belly, cooked in applesauce and crisps, or you could also try Shimeji Mushroom that comes wrapped in bacon. Give the Gyozas a go with their edamame and truffle offering. Delicious much? Graduate to the mains that have staples like ramen and donburi, before you hit the desserts. If you can’t decide which one of their delectable offerings to end with, have the fail-safe Japanese Cotton Cheese Cake that is served with honey gelato, honeycomb, and honey miso toffee.

Happy Thai

Thai constitutes most people’s idea of comfort food, and this new restaurant at Atria Mall in Worli hits the spot. Among their signature dishes is the Hamachi Yellowtail Carpaccio and the Crispy Brussel Sprout Salad. If sushi is what you are looking to sample, try the Rock Shrimp Tempura Roll. If you are a vegetarian, then opt for the delicious Cream Cheese Roll. With an assortment of offerings from Japanese, Thai, and Korean cuisine, you can opt for their Japanese style Katsu curry, or have the Korean Bulgogi for the mains.
