Roll The Dice Because These Luxurious Casinos Are Worth A Visitby | August 30, 2019
In the 1995 James Bond movie, Golden Eye, Pierce Brosnan meets the ruthless but sexy Soviet assassin Xenia Onatopp at a casino where a seductive game of Baccarat is followed by drinks at the bar. And while this might seem like a typical Bond scenario, the location is no ordinary casino. It is set inside the ornate Art Nouveau-style, Casino de Monte Carlo (called The Casino Royale Monte Carlo in the movie) that is one of the most spectacular and iconic gambling venues in the world.
It was because of this particular scene—it’s etched into my husband’s memory—that we planned a trip to the principality of Monaco to sample the high-rolling life. It also piqued my interest in casinos (not merely for money-making purposes) but as historical, cultural, and architectural establishments.
But it’s not just Bond movies that hold the monopoly over casinos, various Hollywood movies have shot sequences in casinos for their charm, their sparkly lights, and the high-flying crowd. From the bro-code bonanza in The Hangover to 21, where math geeks try to break the casino code; Hollywood has bet big bucks on the cards table.
It’s little wonder then that whatever part of the world you visit, one can see tourists thronging to the gates of a gambler’s paradise. A combination of luck and calculated risk, many are happy to sit at the table with gambling’s high return possibilities. In fact, in certain cultures, primarily the Chinese, it’s gambling is considered auspicious, which is the reason many throng to the casinos on Chinese New Year uttering the phrases ‘Deng’ or ‘Ding’ for good luck.
So, whether you wish to visit a casino for the free drinks (mostly popular in big-name casinos in the United States Of America) or to try your luck at the slot machines or even play with the high rollers in private chambers, here’s a list of the most luxurious casinos in the world.
Hôtel de Paris & Casino de Monte Carlo, Monaco
Coming to the aforementioned grand venue, Hôtel de Paris & Casino de Monte Carlo in Monaco is a beaux arts-style wonder that was commissioned by Princess Caroline in a bid to save Monaco from bankruptcy. After many hits and trials, the casino finally took its current shape as an opulent and ornate Monaco-esque structure that serves the gambling appetite of the European elite. The ostentatious venue can often be spotted in the backdrop of the famous Circuit de Monaco Grand Prix race and is perpetually flocked by some beautiful super cars (Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, you name it, and it’s there). Inside, if you can tear your eyes away from the beautiful frescos, gilded sculptures, and painted walls, you can try your luck at roulette, blackjack, craps or the slots. Outside, you have the luxurious Hôtel de Paris on the right and Café de Paris (on the left) perfect for people or car watching.
