We Are Crushing Hard On The Make-Up Looks In HBO's New Show, Euphoriaby | August 13, 2019
Have you watched Euphoria yet? The HBO show airing on Hotstar has just seen its Season 1 finale and has garnered much buzz owing to its strikingly relatable and real storyline, and the fabulous make-up on the show that does not go unnoticed.
A typical premise with an atypical plot, the show revolves around a set of Gen-Z high-school teens as they maneuver through their complicated lives in search for their identities. Drugs, discovering sexual identities, first loves and impending heartaches, the show has it all.
But while it is the narrative that has the audiences hooked to the show, it is the effective use of make-up that has got people talking about it. The make-up artists on the show, Doniella Davy and Kirsten Sage Coleman, have used make-up as a means of self-expression much like teenagers IRL. There is a ton of glitter, creative use of stickers and rhinestones aplenty.
We stalked the make-up artists on Instagram to curate the best make-up looks on the show. Whether it is age-appropriate or not, we cannot say. But then again, do we ever outgrow sparkling rhinestones and glow in the dark stickers?
One of the pivotal characters on the show, Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, is a trans woman who expresses her individuality through the way she carries herself, make-up included. Her carefree demeanour reflects through her bold make-up choices. You will see her use metallic stickers in the inner corner of her eyes, glitter on her lids, to conceal the bags under her eyes and on her brows. There are also experiments with stickers, sequins and a lot of neon strokes to create the 'floating crease' effect. These are some of her looks we want to copy, stat.
Maddy's (Alexa Demie) looks have got to be some of our favourite on the show. Her character is that of a cheerleader who is dating the most popular jock in the team. Innately shy, Maddy suffers from body image issues and an abusive relationship and takes to make-up to embolden herself. Her looks mostly involve A LOT of rhinestones decorating her lids and adorning her brows. Her eyes are always impactful and to recreate these looks could take hours at end. But here's to not giving up. Scroll down to see her bejewelled eyes.
And while all the above looks involved extensive use of rhinestones in varied hues, these are some of the 'simpler' looks the actress has sported on the show.
Kat's (Barbie Ferreria) character is a virgin-turned-seductress. She begins as a naive teenager with body issues into becoming someone that explores her sexuality through a series of her encounters. As her character graph evolves, so does her look. From a missable jeans-and-Tee girl, Kat turns into a confident dominatrix who dresses the part. Shiny vinyl, leather, belts and buckles and are complemented with strong brows, glossy red lips, and lids that range from smokey to neon. We love her character evolution on the show, and these are some of her best looks.
Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, is the typical girl next door, and her make-up has been kept clean and pared-down through the show to convey that. But one of the most iconic and intensive looks of the season is also hers. The below look is definitely the highlight of the show, and if you read Coleman's caption below you will know that this is more than just make-up. This is art.

We cannot wait for Season 2 to unfurl so we can see how the show develops and the characters and their looks evolve. When it comes to make-up though, the benchmark has been set. Until them, we will continue to seek inspiration from these sparkling looks.
