Suffering From Blind Pimples? We Tell You All About It, And Ways To Treat It

Acne can be frustrating and infuriating. Especially when they make a sudden and surprise appearance overnight, leaving you distraught. There are several ways of getting rid of pimples and acne from topical ointments to oral medication, but it is key that you identify the kind of acne you are suffering from first. There are different kinds with varying severity but one of the most stubborn and difficult to get rid of are blind pimples.

What Are Blind Pimples?

If you thought dealing with acne and pimples is hard, then you clearly haven’t dealt with blind pimples. These are the stubborn ones that are painful and deeply rooted under your skin, lurking underneath the skin, threatening to surface, but not rising. It results in what looks like a small white bump under the skin with slight inflammation in the skin surrounding it. Or, it could be painful icebergs that have risen to the surface with a visible white bump on the surface of the skin.

We can try to tackle these by picking on them or slathering them with drying products: none of which will be effective and will only make things worse. Sound familiar? Well, these are essentially cystic pimples, which is a more clinical term for blind zits. While all blind pimples are cystic, not all cystic ones are blind pimples.

While they’re also called pimples, they are nothing like your standard pimples, and won’t respond to similar treatment. The only way to treat this is with utmost patience. If you are someone that is suffering from underground zits, then read on the know more about them, and how you can defeat them.

What Causes Blind Pimples?

Blind pimples are the result of a hormonal surge,  which for women, is likely to happen around your period. The skin’s oil glands become sensitive to the surge of hormones and react to it by overproducing sebum. The sebum or oil, along with bacteria and dirt gets trapped in your pores, resulting in the oil glands becoming engorged and swollen. This will result in a sensitive bump under the surface of your skin. This pimple won’t have a head like most others, making it difficult to bust. Note: no pimple, regular or cystic should be tampered with.

Another reason for blind pimples could be dietary. Certain food groups can cause inflammation by affecting the skin’s natural balance, enabling the formation of cysts. Try eliminating these from your diet to see if these are the cause of cystic acne. Dairy, for example, is a common factor that causes blind pimples or cystic pimples. Try cutting it from your diet to see if you can see a considerable difference. A diet that ranks high on the glycemic index scale is also to blame for your blemishes. The sugars are inflammatory and can result in acne.

Ways To Get Rid Of A Blind Pimple

Blind pimples or cystic pimples are not easy to get rid of. Unlike regular pimples that deflate in a few days, cystic pimples may take weeks and sometimes even months to disappear. While you may have the patience to wait it out, the problem is that the longer they last, the more likely it is to cause a crater-like scar on that spot. Unfortunately, there is no overnight cure for a blind pimple. Popping these is not advisable, and may not even be possible since it has no connection to the surface of your skin, being deeply rooted. Touching and teasing these can only aggravate it further, exacerbating the skin and spreading the infection.

So what can we do to reduce these stubborn and angry bumps?

Visit Your Dermatologist

The fastest way to get rid of a blind or cystic pimple is to visit your dermatologist for a cortisone injection. A pricier method than any quick home remedy, cortisone shots can cost anywhere between INR 5000-10,000. These effective injections are inserted directly into your pimple and will help speed the healing while also improving the inflammation. 24-48 hours later, the zit will have disappeared, also minimising a chance of scarring. Your dermat could also suggest over-the-counter medication if the pimples persist or oral medication to battle these such as antibiotics, birth control pills and Accutane. These are more long-term and these balance the hormones, reducing the production of acne-causing oil.

Spot Treatment

Unlike regular zits, you cannot treat them with topical spot treatment as well. These cysts form on the inner layers of your skin and remain inaccessible. The spot treatments used typically will only dry your skin and cause it to get flaky without penetrating the skin’s layer. These treatments are meant to kill bacteria on the surface of the skin, helping to tackle and reduce the infection and inflammation.

That said, there are some treatments that can be absorbed deep down by the cysts. These come in handy when you want to pinch pennies or are averse to medication. One such topical ointment available in the market and highly-recommended is the Renée Rouleau Anti Bump Solution. A lactic acid-based formula, this acts as an anti-inflammatory and is formulated to treat bumps that are nestled deep within the skin. It also cuts down recovery time by half owing to the exfoliating ingredients.

Warm Compress

More often than not, we ice pimples to soothe it and to get rid of the redness. In this case, steer clear of icing it. Instead, use a warm compress or a warm water-soaked washcloth and apply it directly on your zit. The heat will bring blood to the affected area in order to aid the body to reduce the inflammation. Apply the warm compress 10-15 minutes around 3 times a day. Do this until the pus is released. This will work more effectively on iceberg pimples with that are on the surface of the skin. Using warm compress will just fasten its release or will bring it to the surface so it can be very carefully popped.
Once popped, use ice to calm the soreness and the redness.

Zit Stickers

Acne stickers are essentially spot treatment but in the form of stickers. These stickers are laced with acne-fighting agents such as salicylic acid that zap the zit. These absorb fluid from the pimple along with the dirt, bacteria and sebum. These clear and circular hydrocolloid bandages are applied directly onto the pimple and can be left overnight. When they turn white and expand is when its time to remove it. The result? You will notice reduced redness and inflammation, and the zit will have flattened without looking dry and flaky. These will not only prevent you from touching it and spreading infection but will also act as a concealer.
