Five Exotic Destinations For Summer Getaways During The Winter

With so many of us looking forward to vacation time, there arises the biggest holiday season dilemma: where to travel this winter? Inviting as they might sound, the temperate shores of Thailand, Bali, and Malaysia have become a go-to, especially around this time of the year when hoards of tourists head there to get away from the harsh winter.

We present you with some great alternatives: from amply warm Sydney to the moderate eco-lodge getaways of Tulum, there’s just so much to explore. Here’s a list of five countries that will give a unique holiday experience and a much-needed respite from the winter chills:

Egypt

Despite the ups and downs the country has seen, you can't deny the lure of ancient history that makes Egypt a great destination, especially in the dappling winter sun. December offers respite from the otherwise extreme climate of the country. Be it a unique scuba diving experience in Hurghada, a luxe cruise across the Nile, or visiting the ruins of Heracleion, there's enough and more to experience in Egypt. With temperatures ranging between a pleasant 20-23 degrees, you can take a stroll amongst the mosques, palaces, and souqs in the capital city of Cairo for a truly Egyptian experience. While the Giza pyramids remain a must-visit, ensure that you experience the Pharaonic village. Here, you will witness the illustrious history of Egypt coming back to life by professional actors.

Barbados

A fun island country to visit almost any time of the year (barring the hurricane season), Barbados is inviting around the year-end owing to the pleasant sun that shines bright for 9 long hours. You are likely to forget about winter when frolicking in the azure sea and silver sands which is just one part of the Carribean experience. When in Barbados, make sure to visit the capital city of Bridgetown to soak in the Banjan culture with sports being a major part of the same. With several historical sites to see, you can visit Garrison Savannah, the military base just to marvel at the breathtaking architecture. Home to diverse flora and fauna, Barbados happens to be the perfect haunt for those who seek to reconnect with nature.

Mexico

Owing to a balmy temperature ranging from a warm 28 degrees to a brisk 20 degrees, there’s hardly a place as vibrant and pleasant as Mexico in the month of December. With the weather just beginning to warm up and the festive vibe setting in, Mexico offers a great holiday experience to all kinds of travellers. While the nature lovers can explore the eco-lodge getaways of Tulum, the ones looking for a leisurely holiday can explore the hedonistically luxurious resorts of playa del Carmen and Cancun. End-December and early-January are the best times to visit this country along with an opportunity to experience the Mexican Posadas and the nativity scenes. The Mexican holiday markets alone are enough to make it a great vacation. Visit Mexico City to explore its exquisite artisan offerings, Guanajuato for its baroque architecture, Patzcuaro to explore the traditional cuisine, and Morelia for a taste of the country's history.

One of the very few regions to celebrate a summer Christmas, Australia gets quite warm and toasty towards the year-end. If you are longing for the beach with the wind in your hair and sand in your toes, this is your destination. This also happens to be when all the unique festivals in Australia take place, from the Penguin Parade to Moonlight Cinemas under the stars. If you plan to visit Australia over Christmas, then the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has to feature on the top of your itinerary. Also, make sure to actually experience the absolutely different vibes of both Circular Quay and Jervis Bay to soak in the diversity that Australia offers.

Cape Verde

With a striking mix of alluring beaches and towering dunes, Cape Verde makes for a great escape. Located almost 600 kms off the Western coast of Africa, the archipelago experiences heavy rains during August and September making it lush green and tourist-ready come November. Especially recommended are the scenic islands of Santo Antão and São Vicente, covered with thick foliage that form a beautiful contrast against the cerulean Sal and Boa Vista beaches. Besides its unique topography, Cape Verde flaunts unique anthropological history owing to a population that essentially came out of colonialism, with Portuguese accents. In fact, the island is aptly located to give you an experience in desolate grandeur with its serene vibe, scanty population, and scenic topography.
