Bruges

Equally alluring throughout the year, this quaint, little Belgiam city turns into a winter wonderland come the colder months including January. Right from its picturesque web of canals to cobbled alleys, 17th century mansions, and elegant cathedral tower, the medieval town has so much romance wafting through the air that it’s impossible to leave untouched by its many charms. This has to be your January haunt if you seek to ring in the new year on a vintage note. A long weekend would be more than enough to soak in the rich culture and the beauty of its Gothic architecture. You can have a merry time while indulging in a generous helping of Beiglian chocolate, some Brugse Zot or Straffe Hendrik at one of its charming cellar cafes and also a horse carriage ride if you seek to get one with the spirit of this fairytale city.

Cancun

Start your new year on a sunny note with the white sand beaches of Cancun and its magical world of underwater caves and rivers. One of the most beautiful Mexican cities, this one will have you awestruck with all that it has to offer right form Zona Hotelera’s turquoise waters to the immaculately preserved Maya culture glimpses of which you will get to see at Museo Maya De Cancun along with MUSA, underwater museum and the largest artificial reef in the world. The culinary scene in Cancun is as thriving as its biodiversity and make sure that Xoximilco, the Mexican fiesta experience stays at the top of your itinerary. However, it’s the nightlife scene at the Forum By The Sea that offers you an array of cafes, nightclubs, and restaurants including a rather too busy Hard Rock cafe that makes Cancun a well-rounded experience.

Lanzarote

Visit Lanzarote for the pleasures of a clear blue sky, balmy weather and volcanic landscapes so spectacular that the moon-like terrain of the Timanfaya National Park has led to the island being declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. Often described as“other-worldly” owing to the extraordinary geology, the island is no short of an artwork, all thanks to the illustrious legacy that César Manrique, the 20th-century lanzaroteño artist and environmentalist, has left behind. Visit the black ash vineyards of La Geria to relish some dry whites and learn about their fascinating collection of distilling equipment, antique barrels, and wine presses. Immaculately preserved, the island will also give you the pleasure of unobstructed island views all thanks to its minimalist simplicity and strategically done dwellings with houses painted only in shades of blue, green, and white.

Athens

With its layers and layers of illustrious history, Athens is a charming modern metropolis that combines the old and the new in the heady mix of a vibrant city that leaves a lasting impression on the visitor. You’d be both enamoured and surprised by the complexity of its cultural heritage that also lends the city its unique aura. While you'll find Byzantine churches, you’ll also come across inflections of Ottoman architecture along with traces of neoclassicism all over the city. Touched by the magnificence of Acropolis, you’ll find yourself falling for the vivacity of this place as much as for its ruins in a paradox as beautiful and as complex as Athens itself.

Gokarna

An interesting mixture of a temple town and a beach destination, Gokarna is swiftly rising to popularity with time. Ideal for a family vacay, the temple town gives you a taste of its Dravidian architecture with the quaint Mahabaleshwar temple and the moss covered Mirzan fort. Opt for a beach camp to truly experience the beauty of this tranquil town and don't forget to indulge in water sports, candle night dinners and late night beach strolls. You’d be greeted with green terrains and gorgeous waterfalls if you go a little further from the town.

Udaipur

With a royal history that continues to live through its fantastical palaces, and vibrant hawelis, bunched alongside ancient thoroughfares, Udaipur has a way of moving you with its antiquity. However, it is the Lake Pichola lined by array of heritage hotels and royal establishments that makes for the heart of this warm, welcoming city. Famously called the “City of Lakes,” Udaipur has to be your go to city if a luxurious albeit laidback gateway is what you are looking for. All you need to do is book one of its lakeside heritage properties and everything else will be taken care of by the unmatched Rajasthani hospitality.  The Oberoi Udaivilas and Taj Lake Palace remain busy throughout the year owing to their grand and opulent setups. However, ensure to make some time for some traditional bandhani shopping at the Hathi Pol Bazaar, a guided tour to Saheliyon Ki Bari, and to gorge on some Rajasthani delicacies at Jagat Niwas.

Munnar

With its sprawling green green tea-plantations, clipped and cropped like ornamental hedges, every bit of Munnar feeds the eyes and the soul. The velvet covered Western Ghats make this hill station one of the most coveted honeymoon haunts in South India. Visit the place for its emerald hues, rich flora, and the joys of traditional Malayali food that ranges from the elaborate sadhya to deep fried banana chips. While you go for a  trek at Eravikulam National Park, visit Mattupetty for its striking lake, or feast on the surreal beauty of Chinnakanal waterfalls, Munnar is essentially one of those destinations that needs to be felt more than its experienced. Just book a luxurious lodge, soak in the beauty, and get energised for an eventful year.
