Oscars 2020: Best Dressed Meets Fashion For A Cause At The Academy Awards

The red carpets at the plethora of award shows are heavily scrutinised, the best dressed and who-wore-what lists dropping at a lightening rate, meaning it's only rational to make heads turn for the right reasons as the world watches.

Such seemed to be the thought as the industry geared up for Oscars 2020 and fashion for various causes took centerstage. From Margot Robbie wearing a vintage outfit from the Chanel archives to Joaquin Phoenix championing sustainability by rewearing his Stella McCartney tux, as pledged, for the entire awards season, responsible fashion was one facet of it.

Then, of course, there was Sandy Powell doing her bit for her mentor Derek Jarman; Natalie Portman standing up for equality, and Billy Porter pushing non-conformity a bit further. Read on to see how Hollywood used fashion as a tool to bring about change.

Natalie Portman wore Dior, but that was not the standout moment of her red carpet appearance. The actor made a statement against the Academy's lack of representation with her cape, which was embroidered with the names of eight women directors—Greta Gerwig, Lorene Scafaria, Mati Diop, Céline Sciamma, Lulu Wang, Marielle Heller, Alma Har’el and Melina Matsoukas—who were not recognised for their work this year. “I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in a subtle way,” she said.

In sync with sustainable practices and rewearing, Margot Robbie ditched custom-made outfits in favour of vintage Chanel from the '90s. Styled by Kate Young, Robbie's off-shoulder bustier gown incorporated tied-up ribbons, and a hundred buttons at the back of the bodice along with a lapis lazuli, pearl tassel brooch.

Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell wore the same white suit she had for the BAFTAs, on which she's gathered signatures from attendees like Scarlett Johansson, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and others. The outfit will later be auctioned off to raise money for Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman's legendary home before his death in 1994. The fundraising initiative has been undertaken with Art Fund to save the landmark and accompanying garden from being sold off privately.

Non-Conforming Codes

That Billy Porter has been a non-conformist when it comes to fashion is a fact well known, but it needs to be reiterated that Porter is single-handedly doing everything in his power to further expand the boundaries of non-binary clothing. The idea behind the custom-made Giles Deacon couture offering he wore to the Oscars, inspired by Kensington's Cupola Room, featuring a gold-plated bodice and printed voluminous skirt was conceived when Porter's stylist Sam Ratelle visited the palace last year and was mesmerised by its interiors.

Joaquin Phoenix took home the award in the 'Best Actor in A Leading Role' category while continuing his spree of rewearing the Stella McCartney tux. Phoenix, who has been vocal about the environment and been arrested at a climate change protest, partnered with McCartney, known for her eco-friendly stance, to wear the same black suit for the entire 2020 awards season.
